Hi Katney,
What's the most dangerous animal you see on your adventures?
Gary

And in answer to your question about the most dangerous critters we encounter:
1. humans driving 60 MPH down mountain roads.
2. humans who don't dowse their campfires
3. humans thoughtlessly rolling rocks down the hill (when there are unseen hikers below.)

There are bears and cougars in the forests. Their preference is for us to to leave them well enough alone so that they can leave us alone. But they are there. We have missed meeting a bear by a matter of minutes several times in the last couple of years. (Took trail a and found that there was a bear sighted at the junction of trail b; did some work around the lake and then went up a trail and are overtaken by visitors who saw a bear near the lake.) Other volunteers or park staff have encountered bears or seen them from a distance the day before or the day after we were hiking in the same area.

I always find it difficult to remember: with one you make eye contact, make yourself look big, and back away slowly. With the other you don't make eye contact, make yourself look big, and back away slowly.

If I suddenly stop blogging this summer...
