Paulie, the pelicans come back every year to spend the summer on the Yakima River. I wrote about them here when they first arrived this spring. They are large, and whether there are two or twenty togehter, they fly in formation as precisely as the Blue Angels. Sometimes the white of their back shows and sometimes they fade into almost invisibility against the sky, depending on the angle and the light.
Pelicans are a wonderful sight - after rain, we would get then visiting us in the desert - this would be a great shot for my new "Friday's Feathers" meme

How could you tell they were pelicans? Did you see them on land also?
