Barnstorming--#1

barn:
A large farm building used for storing farm products and sheltering livestock.
So if they are not large, are they not barns?

Hiding

The modern ones lack character.

Roof sagging seems to be the first step.

Or missing roof planks

Sag

This is the first one I came upon today that was red. When I was growing up, "barn" and "red" always went together.

My barnstorming today had a plan, that I would end here at the Marble barn. This round barn is a landmark in our town--and from the development nearby, it sure looks like soon the IN will be literally taken, as the next street over now has curbs and there is a real estate development farther down. (I hope it doesn't go the way of Kelly's barn. It has been preserved over time, so it has hope.)

At one time I was told the history of the Marble Ranch and the reason it was round. The reason has faded from my memory, but I believe it had something to do with feeding the cows. Maybe someone knows why this barn might have been built in this form.

What are barns like where you live?

That round barn is neat. We used to play in barns on the farms of my relatives (many dairy farmers.) They were like huge playhouses. I have to see if I have any barns stored away.

You captured a great amount of local history in these pictures. I have posted a couple of barns on my blog. Day 39 post is a single picture . Day 37
barn and silo are in the fourth picture, barely visable in the distant spot of the setting sun. We still have a lot of working farms in this part of Maryland, but quite a number are also now housing developments or industrial parks.

The round barn is great! Check Wikipedia for an explanation. Enjoyed your pictures and I agree that the new ones have no character.

I agree with you - the modern barns are just not the same. In England they're mostly modern, and we don't have red barns.

Although there is a pub nearby called The Red Barn, apparently because someone was murdered in the hayloft......!

I really like that round barn. There is something about unique shapes that I love. I have always wanted a round house. Great photos, you have given me inspiration to drive around and take pictures of barns when it gets warmer.

if they were not large, I'd say they were sheds.

mind you there's a huge differnce between a garden-shed and an engine-shed!

Many barns in the UK have been converted into houses - in fact it is quite cool to live in a "barn-conversion"

I love old barns...yes...much more personality than the new aluminum ones! When I'm up in Virginia I try to find & photograph them because I know they and the pastures around them will be gone soon. Last year I wanted to shoot a red barn and barely found one.

and by the way, i kind of want to take captain annoying to the library now, it would be great fodder for my blog.
