When this young marmot came romping down the trail toward us the other day, I thought--he hasn't taken the lecture about how the animals have habituated themselves too much to the human presence in the Park.
Then I realized that he simply wanted to pose for his portrait in profile.
Jonna started doing Twofers on Tuesday--two related photos or photos in pairs. You can visit her here.

That was very decent of him.
hehehehe Now that is cute and your thinking even more brilliant! I mean, those marmots see you coming with a camera and they have to pose!
Gee, I thought you were finally home! I told you . . . retirement keeps you more busy than school does. I found that impossible to believe at first but now I am a believer.
I wonder if he is a she .. since she looks either pregnant or well fed ...

Daryl, I don't know if it was a he or a she, but marmots need to be well fed by this time of the summer. In fact, this one looks a bit thin, so I hope he/she survives.
They are true hibernators. They awake in late April/early May skinny from their long winter's sleep. They eat all summer--eat-eat-eat-eat. Usually when you see a marmot it is--guess what!--eating. They build up stores of fat to live on through the winter.
While hibernating, their heartbeat drops to around 5 beats per minute, and if they were waken during that time, it would kill them.
What a nice pose!
Really cute pictures! How adorable.
