Saw two or three of these on our stroll through the Arboretum last week. This one had been set on a bench in the Rose Garden. The others were also obviously not in their original locations, so I have no ide what it might grow on. Any ideas? Even ideas as to how to search for it in a search engine? Weird fruit just doesn't seem like it would turn up anything accurate in the image search.
For Odd Shots on Monday--
Using image search, I did find an answer here, but I don't know how she found it. With her identification you can read more about it on Wikipedia, or research the name further.

Odd indeed. It might be some sort of gourd. I saw some pumpkins at the Frederick fair with rough textured skin which I posted as an Odd Shots encore.
Try Google's "Search by Image": http://www.google.com/insidesearch/searchbyimage.html
Is it some sort of Pumpkin for Halloween.
Uuuorrh, it looks like a brain!!
It does remind me of a brain. I think you need to go back and ask a docent. I can't imagine how to google it.
That is very odd and interesting. Now I am going to have to google it to see where it grows normally. I wonder why it was left in those places?

Hey, it looks like a breadfruit. I am reasonably sure it is a breadfruit, or its cousin.
