When I returned in the afternoon the mail was working fairly well. The message from the ISP was this:
The mail server suffered a crash this morning, and we have been busy rebuilding it.
Things seem back to normal now--only the usual local crashes.
Still later note--in the afternoon next day I discovered about 50 messages caught in the server's spam guard and dating back three weeks. They hadn't been there before. Might have been a clue that something untoward was imminent.

I thought they had fixed that! Try taking your blog off moderation if you look for comments in email . . . I did that one day and things were ok. I was going to leave it off but someone had sent me a comment I had to moderate and it didn't show up on dashboard so I went back to previous setting and there it was! I forgot to go back to no moderation but will try it again next week.
That is just typical!
Grrrrr on your behalf!
(love the patterns you made)
Oh, the irony! If it weren't so irritating, it might be amusing! ;-) Hope they manage to get it fiXed soon.
Figures! Hope it works itself out for you soon.
LOL! Very funny and so typical! I hope that your "issue" is soon resolved.
When I had internet connection problems a while back, I call the service provider and got the roecrding that said try turning every thing off an on again, then go to there web site. Hello! I called because not web sites are reachable. I hope your issue is resolved soon.
"Louis" joins the others in hoping your e-mail 'issue' is resoved soon. The lack of service at these internet providers is maddening.
