This time we decided to check it out.

This arrow pointed to the mountain, which lost a bit over a thousand feet of itself on May 18, 1980.

(Other than a small bulletin board with a bit of information and a couple of porta-potties, this was pretty much all there was to the viewpoint.)
There are several points around the state where Mt. St. Helens can be viewed from different angles. This is the somewhat disappointing view from this particular viewpoint.
I don't know if this viewpoint was there before the 1980 eruption. If it was, the view would have included the portion of the mountain roughly outlined below.
No kidding! The mountain at that time was itself quite a bit more pointed.

You make a very powerful Point illustrating just how powerful Mother Earth is. Makes you wonder at the ones that believe we can control nature.

ReplyDeleteMy husband was about 9 years old living in Florence, Oregon when Mt. St. Helen's erupted. He still remembers the day, and the ash that reached even there!

ReplyDeleteThis was so interesting. St Helens' story is certainly a huge warning that humanity should not mess with Nature. She has the real power. We only think we have.
ReplyDeleteIt's astonishing to think how destructive the Mount St Helen's explosion. It demonstrates the the terrifying power of the earth. And yet it's by now means the most destructive that the planet has to offer.

ReplyDeleteI remember when the mountain exploded! We could hear it all the way to Vancouver - I didn't, because I was busy trying to give birth to daughter #2! Great post!

I always loved driving to / from Washington to / from California and seeing Mt St Helen's and Mt Rainier as we drove along. Fortunately, we had several opportunities since either, or both, were frequently behind the clouds.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point! I went to see Mt. St Helen's abut 4 years ago. A friend drove me to see it since I lived in Idaho when it erupted. I was impressed how much it had "come back" since then but there were still plenty of reminders of the damage too.
ReplyDeletegreat pointed picture! I will never forget the day Mt. St. Helens erupted... I was stranded in Pullman for too many days!! I was only visiting for the week-end and teaching in Idaho.
