If you have followed my ABC's, you are probably expecting to see some Mt. Rainier wildflowers which start with I.
~
I am at a loss for flowers this week, and I won't go putting the iris from the garden in my Mt. Rainier theme here on ABC just because it starts with I. Instead, I will feature some views from a winter hike on Naches Loop. Actually, it wasn't winter yet, but the beginning of November when we saw these Icicles on the east side of Naches Peak.
When we got to this part of the trail, we wished we had either started on this side when the sun was still on it, or taken along our snowshoes to use the cleats on the icy trail.

And now, back to the summer, for a peak at an impromptu shelter we rigged up while camping with the grandkids. We were a couple of kids short on tent space last year, so this served well for the more adventurous of the crew. Camping with the grandkids is one of the favorite events of the year for all involved. It is a special time for the cousins. And one grandson told a cousin, "Grandma and Grandpa are expert campers."
Well, I hope it was a lot warmer when you camped!
ReplyDeleteFantastic icicles. We don't get anything like that here. Never gets very cold.
All frozen.
ReplyDeleteCool shots! :)
Marvellous the photographs with splendid the `' I `', and topical subject! Most excellent post!

I like the comment from the grand child!
ReplyDeleteOooo... ahhh... those are awesome icicle waterfalls on the hillside that you spotted... pretty!
ReplyDeleteThe Rocky Mountain Retreat
Those are the coolest photos of icicles I have ever seen. Yikes. I'm so impressed with your dedication to hiking...
ReplyDeleteburrrrrrrrrrrrr ... great shots, Katney!
ReplyDeleteWow those are great shots. Did you camp when it was that cold, Burr. Hope you had a trailer or MH ?
ReplyDeleteGreat shots! But you said that your icicles were longer than mine -- I think you need to go back and enlarge the first photo of mine -- hard to see how long that icicles is against the grayness of the shed. I think that one is as long as the ones I see here. Your icicles were in direct light on dark surfaces and not shaded by two buildings. Ü
ReplyDeleteWe save our camping for the summer, but do love to hike in the wintertime with or without our snowshoes. There are areas we cannot reach in winter--because the roads are closed and it would be way too far to hike in from outside. And sometimes this season the passes have closed for one or more days, so that even reaching the other side of the mountains is not possible.
ReplyDeleteWhen we went snowshoeing with Paulie in January, there was a group of youth preparing to camp overnight above Paradise. I will stick with my warm winter hotel room, thank you very much, but in the summer, that impromptu shelter would suit me just fine!
The pass where the trail shown in this post is located is closed for the winter. It closed about two to three weeks after these photos were taken, and will open again in mid to late May. Getting the road plowed out is a precise and careful endeavor, as care must be taken that portions of the road have not been severely damaged (as in, dropped into the valley) before teh plow can cross.
Oh beautiful shots of the iceles, and as far as the camping goes, at lest it keep you dry.
ReplyDeleteYour comment came in after my added notes. Do you know that that first cliff of icicles is about forty feet high? But I cede the fact that some of your icicles may be much longer than I thought.
ReplyDeleteGosh, I could not imagine hiking in that cold! Or camping either! Good for you - I admire you for that. :D
ReplyDeleteNice one Katney
ReplyDeletelate but now mine is up.
Ice, icicle's - shivering here!
ReplyDeleteBut great shots.
All these icicles. We don't have them here, or I should say rarely.
ReplyDeleteLovely. I love camping, too. Instead of grandkids, I have dogs. I added your link to my site so I can remember Odd shot mondays!
ReplyDeleteI love hiking but not if it is cold like this...
ReplyDeleteI think our icicles will be here until summer!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! Nice photos.
ReplyDeleteThose are some awesome icicles.
ReplyDeleteCold but beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThos photos are beautiful but oh, they look so cold! The impromptu tent is great. I love camping.
ReplyDeleteIcicles are magical. They almost make winter worth it. LOL
ReplyDeleteIcicles in a popular choice today, but I love your pictures :)
ReplyDeleteAWESOME pictures
ReplyDeleteVery good ice photos! Hope you were wrapped up warm.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, our icy cliffs are similar, but yours are much better. Looking at your profile it looks like we have lots of interests in common. - Margy

ReplyDeleteI don't see many icicles down here. But since I can just look at your pictures that is not all bad.
ReplyDeleteGary
What what Impressive Icicles! I hope you weren't hiking. I never got to go camping as a kid, so I'm sure your grandkids had great fun cold or not.
ReplyDeleteHello to others campers experts !
ReplyDeleteGreat icicles !
I saw some smaller ones in the Alpes in Autumn on a small "torrent" and I was very pleased.
Had to come back and say I laughed at your comments re my poll! You sound just like me! LOL!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! The second icicle picture is my favourite.
ReplyDeleteGreat to be considered expert by your grandkids!
Spectacular icicle photos; looks very cold.
ReplyDeleteMagnificent icicles, Katney and the rest of the kaboodle about camping makes me long for the great outdoors. Tonight I will go out to tromp around Indian mounds. It's the Spring Equinox.
ReplyDeleteTerrific icicles. I think its amazing how they hang. It seems a bit scary trying to climb over the slippery ice.
